QUARTER FINAL Results. Best of FIVE Frames

Table ONE.  Referee - Tom Vernon.  Timekeeper - Chris Broomhall.

Robbie Jenkinson (Kennys Dragons) 3-1 Dave Ashton (Metro Bar A)

Table TWO.  Referee - Kev Brown.  Timekeeper - Peter Sandhar.

Mike Barker (Perkins Cue) 1-3 Gavin Davies (Kennys Bear)

Table THREE.  Referee - Shaun Cooper.  Timekeeper - Ben Crossley

Rob Wharne (St. Georges) 3-0 Dave Barker (Perkins Cue)

Table FOUR.  Referee - Dave Whitfield.  Timekeeper - Jim Simpson.

Andy Rawlinson (Kennys Bear) 3-2 Alan Mason (Hop Pole C)

Rob Wharne reached his 6th consecutive Semi Final after seeing off former team mate Dave Barker against whom he has played in each of the last 5 years (SF 2011,12, RU 2013 & L16 2014). He ran out a 3-0 winner but the match was closer then the scoreline suggests.

Gavin Davies was drawn against Mike Barker and this was a close match with both players having good chances to win. But Barker unfortunately fouled in frames 3 & 4 at crucial times and Davies took his chance to win 3-1 and book his semi final place for the 2nd year in a row.

Robbie Jenkinson maing his 1st QF appearance took on the experienced Dave Ashton and this proved to be a closely fought battle as both players had good chances to progress further. It was Jenkinson who just had enough to see off the challenge of Ashton and eventually ran out 3-1 winner

Andy Rawlinson won through to the Semi Final with a hard fought and close battle against Alan Mason. The match ebbed and flowed with Rawlinson winning the 1st frame and then Mason winning the next 2. However it went to a decider and Mason had a great chance but rattled the black in the corner and a great double by Rawlinson saw him pot an easy black to reach his first Semi Final since 2008 which he won.

SEMI FINAL Results. Best of SEVEN Frames

Table THREE.  Referee - Dave Barker.  Timekeeper - Shaun Cooper.

Robbie Jenkinson 4-1 Gavin Davies

Table TWO.  Referee - Jason Armishaw.  Timekeeper - Neil Addison

Andy Rawlinson 1-4 Rob Wharne

Robbie Jenkinson reached his first Singles Final with a 4-1 win over Gavin Davies. The match started with a few nerves but Jenkinson settled alot quicker as he raced into a 2-0 lead with some fine potting. Davies did pull one back, pouncing on a mistake by his opponent to mae it 2-1 but this didnt deter Jenkinson from his gameplan. Jenkinson closed out the match to secure his final place.

England International Rob Wharne took on the challenge of winter League average winner 2014/15 Andy Rawlinson. This promised to be a tight tussle between these fellow County players as both players displayed a cautious approach to their game. It was Wharne who too the first frame after a fine clearance but Rawlinson immeadiately hit back by taking the 2nd frame. However Wharne started to get a stranglehold of the match and was finding his potting form which saw him win the next three frames and so book his place in the final.

FINAL Result. Best of NINE Frames

Table FOUR.  Referee - Dave Whitfield.  Timekeeper - Shaun Cooper.

ROB WHARNE 5-1 Robbie Jenkinson

Rob Wharne was going for his 6th title in a row whereas Robbie Jenkinson was playing his first final. This was a final watched by a good size crowd with both players determined to get off to a good start. In the 1st frame it was Wharne who broke but left it dry. Jenkinson seized the chance and cleared the table to record a fine 'dish' to go 1-0 up.

However, this seemed to set off Jenkinson's nerves as he struggled to maintain that form as Wharne started to come into the match with some fine tactical play and then fine potting. The match started to slip away from Jenkinson's grasp as Wharne ran off 4 frames in a row in no time. The 6th frame was a close affair as both players traded tactical shots and it was Jenkinson who had a great chance but, unfortunately, after potting a fine red into the corner, he caught the black and it went straight into the middle pocket to hand Rob Wharne his 6th title.

It was a shame the match ended this way but there was no denying that Wharne performed to the standard everyone is accustomed to seeing. A fine performance and a great achievement to make it 6 titles in a row and also become the most successful Singles champion in the history of Stafford Sunday Pool.

A great Finals night and a big thanks to all the people that officiated on the night and also to Kennys Sportsbar for their hospitality. Also great to see a good turnout from all the league players who attended this event.

SEMI FINAL Results

Table THIRTEEN.  Referee - Kev Brown.   Timekeeper - Chris Broomhall

Dave Whitfield (Perkins Cue) & Rob Wharne (St Georges) 3-0 Mick Addison & Duncan Sunderland (Hop Pole C)

Table TWELVE.  Referee - Dave Barker.   Timekeeper - Alan Mason

Warren Jesney & Ben Crossley (Kennys Dragons) 2-3 Mark Sheerin & Will Edge (GPO Club A)

Whitfield & Wharne reached the Final of the Sunday Doubles after coming through what seemed a close draw against the Hop Pole duo of Addison & Sunderland winning 3-0. However there were chances for the latter who decided that the best form of defence was attack. This looked like it was going to work but missing crucial pots towards the end of their visits proved costly. It was left to Whitfield & Wharne who seized their opportunity to clean up the frames to put themselves in the Final

The other Semi Final proved to be a lot closer with both pairings having good phases in the match. It was Sheerin & Edge who started off brightly showing their intent to go for their chances when they came. They raced to a 2-0 lead but Jesney & Crossley were determined to get back into it and they did with some fine potting which resulted in them levelling the match at 2-2. The 5th frame was closely fought by both doubles but a chance came to Will Edge and he showed a lot of composure to clear the remaing 4 balls to put Sheerin & Edge in the Final.

FINAL Result

Table THREE.  Referee - Jason Armishaw.  Timekeeper - Neil Addison

Dave Whitfield & Rob Wharne 4-0 Mark Sheerin & Will Edge

Both sets of Doubles were keen to get off to a good start with the chance to become Stafford Sunday Town Doubles Champions. Both Whitfield (2007) & Wharne (2009 & 2011) have been champions before whereas Will Edge has been runner up twice before (2005 & 2010) and Mark Sheerin was in his first Final.

The first frame was underway with all players showing a few nerves and some uncharacteristic misses. it turned into a scrappy affair and eventually it was Wharne who seized the intiative and cleared to give himself & Whitfield a 1-0 lead.

The second frame mirrored the first again with both doubles struggling to get a stranglehold. Sheerin & Edge had chances, but a missed opportunity let Whitfield in and he calmly potted the black to claim the second frame to lead 2-0.

The third frame was important for Sheerin & Edge as they needed to respond quickly. Wharne had a 'dry break' and Sheerin then chose his suit but missed his next ball. Whitfield came to the table and slowly found some rythmn which resulted in an 8 ball clearance to give himself & Wharne a 3-0 lead.

The fourth frame was another crucial one for the GPO pair but a 'dry break' by them set Wharne up and he followed Whitfield's clearance in the previous frame with an excellent clearance in this one.

That gave Whitfield and Wharne the Crown and doing so went through the whole tournament not dropping a frame (14-0). Sheerin & Edge should hold their heads high with some fine performances on the way to the final.

A big thanks to Kennys Sportsbar for hosting the event and to all players who helped officiate the Finals night.

FINAL Result

Charlotte Shelley 1-4 IRENE WOOD - Table FOUR

Irene Wood became the Stafford Sunday Singles Ladies Champion for the first time at her first attempt. She was up against 3 times Champion Charlotte Shelley and a good final was in prospect. Both players were quickly in their stride but a determined approach by Irene gave herself a 2 frame cushion with some fine potting and tactical play. Charlotte pulled a frame back hoping it would kickstart her defence of the crown. However Irene maintained the 2 frame lead witha fine clearance and then in the 5th frame she closed the door on Charlotte and seized her chance to play out the frame to give herself a 4-1 victory to claim the prize as Sunday ladies champion.

summer plate team ko final

Played on Sunday 6th September 2015 @Kennys Sportsbar

KENNYS POTTERS  1-4  ST GEORGES

St Georges claimed the Summer Plate Team KO over 2014 winners Kennys Potters.

Frame ONE - saw St Georges Captain, Paddy Baidwan take on the Kennys Potters Nick Lenton. This was evenly matched frame with both players going for their shots. Eventually it was Baidwan who too his chance and put the Georges 1-0 up

Frame TWO - it was the turn of John Daniels (St Georges) who was drawn against Stuart Skelton (Potters). This again followed the same pattern as the first frame but it was the experience of Daniels who seized the opportunity and sink the blac to put the Georges 2-0 up.

Frame THREE - Jamie Woolley (St Georges) was paired against Clair Maslin (capt, Potters). This was possibly the closest of the frames played. the frame ebbed and flowed with both players having opportunities to snatch the frame. Then a missed chance by Woolley on the black gave Maslin a chance but unfortunately went 'in-off' when potting her last ball. Woolley then won it to make it 3-0 to Georges.

Frame FOUR - Ian Crowe (St Georges) then took on Stuart Hardy (Potters). This was a crucial frame for the Potters as they needed to win it to give them hope. After an exchange of safety play, Hardy saw his chance to capitalise and he duly did with a fine clearance and pull a frame back for the Potters at 3-1 down.

Frame FIVE - Jamie Woolley (St Georges) was then drawn against Stuart Hardy (Potters). This again proved to be a tight affair as both players tried to get a stranglehold on the game. However it was Woolley who pounced and cleared the table to give the St Georges a well deserved Summer Plate Title.

A big thanks to Lynda Simpson and Jason Armishaw on refereeing the Final and also to Kennys Sportsbar for their hospitality.

summer league team ko final

Played on Sunday 6th September 2015 @Kennys Sportsbar

JOINERS ARMS  0-4  PERKINS CUE

Perkins Cue are the 2015 Market Promotions Summer League Champions. It is their 8TH Title and also have now made it 4 years in a Row. They have remained unbeaten in that period of time stretching a total of 52 matches. Joiners Arms however, should hold their heads high after a very good campaign which saw them beat Kennys Bear (group stage), Hop Pole C in the quarters and Metro Bar A in the Semi's.

FRAME ONE - Paul Loughhead (Joiners) v Dave Whitfield (Perkins Cue).

Both players got the Final under way and it was Loughhead who broke and gained the upper hand. However both players struggled to find any rythmn and Whitfield could only block bags and slow the game down to try and gain some hold. Loughhead though looked on course to snatch victory and with a couple great doubles he missed his opportunity and let Whitfield in. He then cleared with a long black into the top corner to put the 'Cuemen' 1-0 up.

FRAME TWO - Brendon Ruttledge (Joiners) v Alan Sim (Perkins Cue)

Sim broke but with balls not breaking in the normal Sim manner, it developed into a tactical battle. Both players continually try to disrupt the rythmn with Ruttledge looking in a good position with bags covered. However Sim started to get a stranglehold on the frame and after misplaced positional shot by Ruttledge, it was left to Sim to take his chance. Unfortunately he missed the pot on the black and let Ruttledge back in, but then he failed to capitalise and Sim didnt need another chance and potted the black to give the 'cuemen' a 2-0 lead.

FRAME THREE - Simon Davies (Joiners) v Mike Barker (Perkins Cue)

It was Davies who broke and immeadiately took hold of the game. Barker then hold to play himself into the match making it difficult for Davies to clear the table. With the black tied up over a bag and covered by Barker reds, it proved to be a challenge for Davies. However he gave it his best go but narrowly missed the pot and after an exchange of tactical play by Barker, Davies succumbed to the pressure. So Barker seized his chance and potted the black to give the 'Cueman' a 3-0 lead.

FRAME FOUR - Gaz Bryant (Joiners) v Dave Barker (Perkins Cue)

Barker broke and it was a conservative position how the balls were placed. Bryant got his chance and seemed to be on his way. He unfortunately fell short on position and the game again became and exchange of tactical play. Both players knew the importance of winning this frame with Barker knowing a win will secure the crown and Bryant knowing a win wil put the Joiners back in. Bryant had an opportunity but a failed attempt on his red down the rail let Barker back in. He then set himself up for the clearance and a great double on his last yellow left him a straight black into the corner and he took his chance and gave the PERKINS CUE their 8th Summer League Title.

FRAME FIVE was not required but Bin Singh took on Martin Priestley and the frame was played in a relaxed spirit and it was Singh who took the bragging rights to give the Joiners some cheer.

The Final was played in great spirit between two side worthy of their place in the Final. A good sized crowd watched on and a big thanks to Shaun Cooper and Dave Baker on refereeing the Final. Also a big thanks to Kennys Sportsbar on hosting the Final
