winter team subsidiary ko final

Played on Sunday 12th April 2015

Played at Kennys Sportsbar

HOP POLE C 4-1 ST GEORGES A

2013/14 league Champions Hop Pole C put behind them a difficult Season with a 4-1 victory over fellow 1st Div side St Georges A to claim the Subsidiary Team KO for the 2nd time (previous winners 2004/5).

FRAME ONE saw Alan Mason (Pole C) take on Steve Smith. After a exchange of tactical shots, it was Mason who seized the opportunity as he cleared to give the Pole C a 1-0 lead.

FRAME TWO saw Duncan Sunderland (Pole C) pair up against Mick Ferguson and this more or less followed the same pattern as the first game. Both players showing respect for their pool play, but eventually it was Sunderland who pounced and he potted the black to put the Pole C 2-0 up.

FRAME THREE was the turn of Mick Addison (Pole C) who played Kev Plimmer. Addison had chances and looked in a good position, but a missed chance let in Plimmer and he made no mistake as took his chance and pulled a frame back for the Georges to be 2-1 down.

FRAME FOUR saw previous team mates Simon Key (Pole C) and Jason Armishaw battle it out and chances went begging for both players as it was an important part of the match. However, Key had the last laugh as he steadily cleared the table and give the Pole C a 3-1 lead.

FRAME FIVE saw Kev Brown (Pole C) be drawn against Daz Haycock. Both players were aware of the importance of this frame and it showed as the players gave nothing away. Brown then saw his chance and duly took it to pot the black and claim the Subsidiary Team KO for the Hop Pole C.

A big Thanks to Mark Shaw who came in and refereed the whole final and again to Leigh & Becky for their hospitality.

bin there, done that

Bin 8-BallBin Singh finally popped his 8-Ball cherry on Sunday.

Bin was representing Joiners Arms in their first division clash against Perkins Cue. The Joiners were playing at home so a few of the locals were able to witness history being made.

His clearance of the table was made in the first half of the match and Bin was promptly dropped from the home side's line-up for the second half! In fact, it was one of two 8-balls produced by the home team on the night but, to no avail, as the Cue team claimed a 6-2 victory.

Martin Priestley, his victim, was very gracious in defeat and even posed with Bin for a celebratory photo (see desktop website).

So, congratulations to Bin on his achievement and other players should also feel free to send in photos of themselves claiming their first career 8-Balls.

Kennys Potters (Div 2) created a big shock in the 1st round of the Stan Bent team knockout by knocking out 2013/14 league champions Hop Pole C. Pole C were 3-0 up but a resurgent comeback by the Potters saw them win 4 frames in a row to run out 4-3 winners. Stuart Hardy (2), Nick Lenton & Clair Maslin were the winners. Another win over higher league opposition saw Star & Garter A, also from the 2nd division inflicted a 4-2 win over 1st division Joiners Arms. Wins for Liam Collins, Tom Gilman, Saul Perry & Andy Bent saw the 2nd div leaders through.

Perkins Z picked up their first win of the season with a 4-1 win over fellow 1st division side St Georges A. Allen Hill, Kev Genner, Dean Smith & Chris Nolan all won. 1st division leaders GPO A were made to work hard for their 4-3 win over the 3rd div Princess Royal A and had Mark Sheerin (2), Mick Bryant & Phil Alldiss to thank. Joiners Rebels picked up their first win of the season with a 4-1 win at fellow 2nd div side Staffs Bull B while another all 2nd division tie saw Metro Bar win 4-1 at the Radford Rejects.

singles finals night

Venue - Kennys Sportsbar on Sunday 19th October 2014

Congratulations to Rob Wharne (Kennys Whackpack) on becoming the Market Promotions Stafford Sunday Pool League Singles Champion. It is Rob's 5th Singles title in a row and he now joins Mark Bailey, Tim McGann and Chris Fox in the all time list of winning it 5 times.

Rob overcame the challenge of Mike Barker (Perkins Cue) in the Final, winning 5-1 but the match was closer than the scoreline suggests. The Final was watched by a good sized crowd and the first 2 frames were shared with both players settling into a good rhythm. However, with Barker playing a long doubles tournament the previous week, this was the polar opposite as Wharne started to take control with some aggressive potting and fine clearances that seemed to unsettle Barker, as he made some uncharacteristic misses. Wharne seized the opportunity and quickly rattled off the frames to take his Singles Title and join an elite club.

Rob Wharne can look back on his year with great pride as he became an established England player, finishing high in the International Teams rankings and taking some notable scalps in the Premier Tour League. It was Mike Barker's 2nd final in 8 days and he must be happy, especially with winning the Doubles crown with his brother Dave the week before.

Other notable performances on the night nearly saw Wharne eliminated at the quarter final stage. He was drawn against Alan Mason (Hop Pole C) and it was fine attacking play by Mason which saw him take a 2-1 lead. In the next frame, he nearly pulled off a fine clearance. Unfortunately for him it wasn't to be as Wharne showed his class and won a decider to put him in the Semi Finals. Joining him in the Semis was Gav Davies (Kennys Bear) who shook off a determined challenge from Shaun Cooper (Morrisman). Cooper, playing in his first quarter final, started well but Davies took control and eventually ran out a 3-1 winner.

Mike Barker was made to work hard for his 3-1 win over Duncan Sunderland (Hop Pole C). Sunderland will rue some missed chances as he saw his challenge quickly evaporate with Barker taking the chances that came to him. The other remaining Quarter final saw Dave Whitfield (Perkins Cue) take on Paul Loughead (Joiners). Like Mason and Cooper, it was Loughead's first quarter final appearance and. After a scrappy first frame, which was decided by a fortunate pot on the black, Whitfield came back into the match and a fine long black in the decider saw Whitfield reach his 3rd semi final in 4 years.

The Semi Final stage saw Whitfield drawn against his team mate Barker and the first 2 frames were shared. However, an unfortunate in-off in frame 4 followed by a costly mistake in frame five gifted Barker two chances and he showed no hesitation in taking advantage, running out a 4-1 winner. The other Semi saw Davies take on Wharne and this followed a similar pattern as Davies had chances, but uncharacteristic errors let Wharne in. This seemed to affect Davies and eventually Wharne took control and ran out a 4-1 winner to reach his 5th final in a row.

Quarter Final results -

Mike Barker 3-1 Duncan Sunderland
Dave Whitfield 3-2 Paul Loughead
Rob Wharne 3-2 Alan Mason
Gav Davies 3-1 Shaun Cooper

Semi Final results -

Mike Barker 4-1 Dave Whitfield
Rob Wharne 4-1 Gav Davies

Thanks to Kennys Sportsbar on hosting the Finals night. Also thanks to Kev Brown, Jason Armishaw, Dave Barker, Pete Sandhar, Paddy Singh & Neil Addison for refereeing on the night.

doubles finals night

Venue - Kennys Sportsbar on Sunday 12th October 2014

Congratulations to both Dave & Mike Barker (Perkins Cue) on defending their Doubles crown after a 3-2 win in the final against Chris Nolan & Kev Genner (Perkins Z) who pushed the twins all the way. In a match reduced to best of five frames due to a late start to the final, it was the Barkers who took the first frame with little incident. Then Nolan & Genner then settled down and took out the next 2 frames with some fine clearances. The remainder of the match saw some tactical play with both doubles showing caution and waiting for their opportunities. As it progressed, it was the Barkers who gradually took their chances to secure their 2nd doubles title together. It was Dave Barker's 4th doubles title (with Martin Priestley in 1998/99 & Dave Whitfield in 2007/08. It was also Mike Barker's 3rd title (along with Chris Hanlon in 2008/09).

Other notable performances in the Quarter Finals saw Pete Sandhar & Ben Crossley (Metro Bar) pull off a fine 2-1 win over Martin Priestley & Dave Whitfield (Perkins Cue). The Barkers ran out 2-0 winners over Lynda Simpson & Pippa Steele (Luckpenny), Kev & Aaron Lewis (Hop Pole B) won the all Hop Pole battle against Mark Shaw & Jonathon Lowe (Hop Pole E). Genner & Nolan played well against Baz Davies & Duncan Sunderland (Hop Pole C), winning 2-0.

The first Semi Final saw a family affair as the Barkers paired up against the Lewises and this was a cliffhanger of a game. With the Lewises taking a 2-1 lead it looked as though the twins were staring at defeat. Then fine tactical play swung it back for the Barkers as they seized their chances and eventually ran out 3-2 winners. The other Semi saw Sandhar & Crossley take on Genner & Nolan. The former took the first frame with a fine black by Sandhar. But then an unfortunate 'in off' the black in the second frame was the turning point and Genner & Nolan took control to run out 3-1 winners and book their place in the final.

Quarter Final results -

D Sunderland & B Davies 0-2 K Genner & C Nolan
P Sandhar & B Crossley 2-1 D Whitfield & M Priestley
D Barker & M Barker 2-0 L Simpson & P Steele
K Lewis & A Lewis 2-0 M Shaw & J Lowe

Semi Final Results -

P Sandhar & B Crossley 1-3 K Genner & C Nolan
D Barker & M Barker 3-2 K Lewis & A Lewis

Thanks to Kev Brown, Dave Whitfield & Shaun Cooper for refereeing on the night and thanks to Kennys Sportsbar for their hospitality.

SUNDAY POOL LADIES SINGLES FINALS NIGHT 2014

Held @Kennys Sportsbar, Stafford on Sunday 5th October 2014

Charlotte Shelley became the 'Stafford Ladies Singles Champion' for the 3rd time in 4 years. With victories in 2011 & 2013 she was made to work hard for her win over a determined Lynda Simpson who also has been champion in 2012. This was Lynda's 3rd final and 2nd against Charlotte, so they had alot of respect for each others game. Lynda won the first frame, as both players took time to settle. The 2nd frame was a different story as Lynda had the first chance and was very close to potting the black coming off the side rail but unfortunately missed. Charlotte with 7 yellows and the black took them on and showed great skill with the cueball to clear the table and level at 1-1. The next 2 frames were shared with little fuss. So it went to a best of 3 and nerves started to show as both players started to miss crucial pots. But it was Charlotte who took it by the scruff of the neck and won the match with a long black into the top corner to lift the crown. A good size crowd witnessed a good final played in great spirit and congratulations to both players on their performance.

Also well done to all the other ladies who entered this competition. Also a thank you to both Shaun Cooper & Dave Whitfield for refereeing the Final.

Full results are -

Group B.

They went 3-0 up in no time with Mike Barker (v Jim Simpson), Dave Barker (v Gav Davies) & Alan Sim (v Giles Eastwood) all winning.
